Why are RJ45's wired with pair 2 straddling pair 3? I think it's a throw back to old telephone cabling but it still doesn't make sense!

The Perfect RJ45 Connection

Does anyone know how to make the perfect RJ45 connection?

I have noticed that some high quality test leads have one of the wires going to pins 3 or 6 crossing the middle pair at right angles. I think the theory behind this is that crosstalk is minimised by doing it this way and it improves insertion loss.

Do you know anything about this? does it work?

I haven't tried this yet but it looks kinda fiddly to do, and probably adds quite a bit onto termination time.

What do you think?
